color maps, new unit collections, etc.

I NEED HELP! I have been trying to figure out how to use Adobe photoshop to make color maps and new units. My problem is that I can't figure out how to make complex textures on that program. I keep looking at color maps from bungie and wondering how in hell they did all of that.
Can anybody help me?
