: I have greatly enjoyed all the maps and plugins I've
: collected from the talented designers of the Mill
: since I discovered this site two years ago, and would
: like to begin making my own contributions to the Mill.
: I'm a true beginner, so I wouldn't want to waste
: anyone's time by creating a crappy map or units. I'm
: also quite busy. Is there anyone out there who knows
: where the best tutorials are (if any) for any aspiring
: mapmaker? I have access to Photoshop, Bryce 3D, Poser,
: and RayDream Studios, if that helps. Thanks.
sounds like it might... :)
here are a few sites with tutorials and other useful material that i can think of offhand:
www.creationgames.com <-- contains links to subdomains with tutorials by clem (on indexing), ares (on scripting), cydonian (general beginner's info), soma (contains colour mapping info and material) and pope (scenery and suchlike)
www.vistacartel.com (and www.vistacartel.com/myth/) <-- tutorials on scripting, unitmaking, some colour mapping tricks (like making grass, stones or cobbles), and other info and tools. the tools are essential. for mac you'll want tag extractor (for deconstructing plugins and things) and amber (for editing collections).
beyond that, my hints are to play with the tools, mucking about and doing whatever silly things you can think of to try until you know them inside out, or near as.
if at any stage you have a question, a good active editing forum can be found here: http://www.vistacartel.com/forums/myth/index.cgi?
the people who frequent it (including me) have a vast collective knowledge of myth and how it all works.
all the best,
lank
