Yeah, the media tool is only good for seeing how the reflection map aligns with the color map. This trick might help, though--
Make a template of 16x16 pixel squares each containing a "x" and a "+" (in other words, the squares are divided into 8ths). Copy and paste these edge-to-edge until you have a template the size of your map. Then, if you use this as a reference layer in your graphics app, you will be able to see how the meshwork fits your color map while you're making it. More painstaking, of course, but being able to see the mesh while you're making the color map helps make displacement and passibility better too.
