Media tool in Loathing.

I am running Loathing on my mac. While working on meshes the only way I can create media areas is by creating and importing a media map which is, needless to say, an imperfect process. I can select the media tool, which is supposedly for setting the media attributes for cell elements. But I get no cursor and no Edit>Tool Preferences. Is this feature just turned off or what?
