help with color map please!

Hi, i am a newbie color map maker, altho I am not a newbie to fear, loathing or myth II. i just havent really taken the initiative to launch into bryce or adobe and create a color map of my own instead of stealing my friend's maps =) I tried making a map with Adobe and I saw that it SUCKED. does ANYONE have any suggestions to keep my map from looking plastic? anything from colors to use to filters in adobe to other programs to use. ANY help at all would be appreciated.
