I had the same problem--it's the internal debugger, or something, and it keeps you from even opening either application. The way I fixed it was to throw away my local and preferences folders--this worked, although I lost a lot of hard work. As far as I can tell there's no other way to fix it. BTW, is there an update for Fear? I downloaded the updater to 1.2 and it didn't change a thing--and I still can't view the graphics in the Loathing docs.
