You know, come to think of it, I always thought Myrdred's sudden devotion to revived Cath Bruig Empire was incongruous with his nature as a self-serving liar.
Is there a reason, given his deceptive bent, why Myrdred would swear such unbridled allegiance to Alric, and formerly to Connacht, both Cath Bruig emperors?
Myrdred is said to have continued serving Connacht after Balor consumed the former Cath Bruig emperor, though it is written that Balor needed to "bend" Myrdred "to his will". Despite that line, The Deceiver continued to fight it out with the other Fallen Lords, which is odd if you think about it.
If The Deceiver were truly bent to Balor's will, why did -- and how COULD -- The Deceiver continue to undermine Balor's henchmen during The Great War?
Answer: The Deceiver's actions always had the effect of ruining the dark's ascension while shrewdly bringing about the events leading up to the rebirth of the Cath Bruig. The Deceiver knew during the Great War -- if not before -- that Alric would be the next emperor, and orchestrated his rise to power. This, in turn, means Myrdred never was entirely bent to Balor's will and therefore was a stronger, more potent avatar than either Balor or Connacht. Or Alric.
But Myrdred's way is not to be ruler. Instead, he prefers to serve as an irresistable advisor to whomever is the emperor of the Cath Bruig empire at the time.
