Even if all shades *were* avatara, Maz, you missed a point in SD's post. The *living* person makes the decision to become a shade before that process of becoming undead takes place. It's not like dark lords can just make shades by digging up dead avatara.
I think it's possible that all avatara start out their careers as basically good, but they certainly can *become* evil. Take Connacht/Balor, for instance.
