Not all shades are avatara, all archmages can become ones. I think that both GURPS and Myth II manual says this. Also you could have a choice in your shadification, since I think it has to be pretty immediate after your death. So you could say "Sure I'll let you kill me and bring me back to life as an evil magic unead thingy, if I can use those powers to take revenge on my disloyal subjects.
