: From the Shade flavor in Myth II we can read:
: "...Turquine so mistreated his subjects that even
: his personal guard abandoned him... he agreed to
: endure the indescribable tortures of the Fallen that
: he might have his revenge."
: Who is "he"? Apparently an enemy of Turquine, a
: shade. But why would his guard abandon him? And
: besides, the word "agreed", should it not be
: changed to "swore" or sth like that? After
: all, with whom would someone agree to have a revenge?
: With the shade?
Remember, Shades are archmages who are voluntarily made undead by a greater mage (like the Myrmidons, except they know a little more about what they're getting into.)
Turquine was apparently an evil mage-king who was hated by his subjects, abandoned by his personal guard and overthrown. One of the Fallen Lords offered to make him into a Shade. It's a painful process--perhaps Shades are always in pain--but he agreed so that he could come back with all the power of the Dark at his back, and take revenge on his former subjects.
