And, if you recall, the original story for Pathways into Darkness was set in Europe of Charlemagne's era; a fragment of the history from this story is found on a secret terminal in Marathon.

I think the conclusion is obvious--the Mythworld is an alternate timeline of the Marathon world, where the W'rkncacnter crashlanded in Europe rather than the Yucatan, thus producing a different pattern of evolution. :-)
