Well, a cave was made in the canyon wall on the side of the mesh to which Phelot retreated to, plus it would be stupid to have the champions running after Phelot while Myrdred and Shiver fight the last epic battle of their lives.
That would be like the hero of a movie delivering the punch line at the climax, while everyone else in the movie was talking over a tall-boy and some chips. It's mood-ruining.
