Bahl'al was a great necromancer. He invented Thrall. He made lots of them, and was a Generally Evil Guy™. But of course, no archmage is ever satisfied with their existing levels of power, so this great necromancer goes searching for the Dream of Unlife, which is the most powerfull necromantic spell in existance. He never found it, though.
I believe this reflects another in-development story change; originally all spells were called Dreams. Now Dreams are simply the most powerfull of spells, the shattered fragments of Wyrd's One Dream.
