Avernus is actually a lake in Italy which the Romans traditionally believed to be one of the gates to the Underworld. It shows up a lot in Roman legend.

Oh, and Sinis was one of the many bandits Theseus encountered on the way to meet his father. He was the one who tied people to trees and then let them be launched in the air or torn apart.

Forrest, you want to start a Myth etymology page for all the names, not just those of the Fallen?
