Berserks are the greatest living seafarers, apparently; they fish and explore farther out than any other known Myth race.
As for Alric's ship--it's not amazingly big as far as I can see. It can't be, in fact, since they're sailing it up and down assorted rivers. It's clearly not designed for cross-sea travel. Its size is probably necessary to house a king's appropriately-sized guard and retinue, and to fend off any possible threats such as Leix's pirate.
