BTW, where did that journeyman that you get in the last level come from? It's physically impossible for him to have survived the Last Battle, as there wasn't a journeyman at the last battle!
Personally, I suspect that they did this for gameplay purposes. You always get 7 Zerks, 8 Archers, 4 Dwarves and 1 Jman at the Great Devoid regardless of how many survive the Last Battle (I normally lose at least one or two Dwarves, and the Zerks generally end up numbering something between 12 and 3.) Besides, you need the Jman to wither Soulblighter, and if you had one in the Last Battle, you would be able to heal Alric. This would make it considerably easier (run away! Let Alric deal with them!)
