I opened up the graphics collection for Myth TFL and looked at the sprites - sure enough those ARE tains! ("key for cave gate" - ketc - found in artsound.gor)

Interesting concept, plus it gives an obvious clue to how the tain was destroyed. Murgen and Cu Roi must have tried to take one of the tain-ettes though the exit gate - which was the topological equivalent of trying to turn the tain inside out. (Which, as we well know, is something that only Forrest has the flexibility to do!)
