Lets not also forget the fact that the Great Devoid leads to the Spider-realm, home of the Fetch, and that the energy beam that shoots out of it is just an enlarged Fetch spirit. What significance it has I don't know, but perhaps the Old Gods don't like having severed heads of evil sorcerors thrown into their realm.
