Well, you should know that Bungie did sell and promote GURPS directly, and they stated that the information in GURPS was official. (Though, to me, this isn't very good evidence of GURPS' validity; I'm convinced because of the large amount of Bungie employees involved in its creation.) Also, the Myth 3 folks are drawing heavily on GURPS, so it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with it if you plan to analyze the Myth 3 story. Even if, in your heart of hearts, you don't believe it's *real* Myth. :-)
On the other hand, if you reject GURPS here and now, you can be Ares' new best friend. ;-)
