Soulblighter clearly understood what Balor's head, thrown into the big hole, meant. Otherwise, why would he go there directly to prevent it after Balor's defeat? I don't remember Alric saying, "OK dark, we're going to go the Great Devoid and toss this loser's head in the big hole. Just try and stop us!" The goofily-huge explosion of Balor's Head inside the Devoid was done, I think, just to convince us beyond a doubt that Balor was history.
