He might have had some small spark of Connacht left within him, and unconsciously tried to defeat himself. Not saying he actually did, but he *might.* He might also have expected his link to simply weaken the Lords when he died, so that they couldn't destroy the world but could make it miserable for a millennium; what he didn't expect is that they'd take so much damage from Alric and The Head that they couldn't even win afterwards.
