Hrm... maybe it wasn't Balmung that broke, maybe it was Soulblighter's glaive. Or maybe both. And I would imagine not using the Mahir (plural of Mahir is Mahir; kind alike 'moose'. Big, translucent, nigh-invulnerable, life-sucking moose) would have something to do with pride, like Rabican and Shiver's Dream Duel (why didn't their armies go join in the battle while they were dueling?).
