In the first few decades of each age the Leveler and the Hero gather their forces and battle for a time. Eventuly one is forced into a checked possition and dies fighting.

Some times both die but in the past the strongest side would win anyway, such as in the Wind age.

If the hero does surrvive he will rule awhile and then will be possesed by the spirit of the Leveler as Silli pointed out.

If the age is supposed to be light the Leveler will not surrvive but the hero does not have to live too.

So yes, if the hero makes it he will live only to eventuly destroy what he saved but a leveler has not had a chance to be a good guy again so far.
