I think He did invent them... Think about it _Soul_Blighter, very much like Soul Catcher, Catcher of souls or some such thing. Perhaps the reason he got that name was because he was the first person to extract a soul (Not to mention its a pretty darn creepy name :p )
I bet that Bungie was originally going to call him SoulCatcher (Who was a charecter in The Black Company, and with a name like that, I'd beleive he would make Soulless) But decided to change because they didn't want to Copy The Black Company so obviously.
