The reason that they fought for Balor is that they gave him their word that they would. In exchange for "immortality" they helped him. Balor either couldn't give them true immortality or just screwed it up for his own twisted enjoyment.
As for what happened to them, remember that while they were an actual nation/tribe in the east (presumably either between Gower and the Bruig or past Gower) they can't be _that_ many. Sure they didn't fight for SB 'cause they owed him no alleigance, but the reason we see _none_ of them is because they suffered atrocious casualties. Think of the number of them killed during the actual campaign, then the bulk of them which was stationed at Rhi'Annon and was destroyed. The light almost commited genocide against them for Wyrd's sake!
