From what I gather it's like this: The bible mentions Herod being the king in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus' birth, but Herod died (and it's well documented. The romans _did_ keep good records) in 3 bc or so. So the earliest date that is actually possible if you believe the bible is three years or so earlier than now. Being a militant atheist, however, I don't give a damn ;)
