While I'm all for the Deciever being alive and frequently advocate that idea, here's an explanation on why he dies like a normal human.
The Deciever is an Avatara. Plain and simple. He was corrupted (or switched alliegeances) sometime in the past. Perhaps before Balor came. Avatara die like normal people because they are normal people. Just look at Alric.
Balor had to have his head chopped off and pitched into the devoid because he was the Leveller.
Shiver died that way because she was a spirit forced into corporeal form. That was the energy that was binding her being blown to bits (IMHO).
Soulblighter had to be thrown into the lava because he was casting that spell and anyone who got too close was fried (try it, it's not fun :P). So logically if you can't get to him, why not get to what he'sw standing on? So Alric blew up the Anvil (what the ledge was called. Check out the scripting i think).
