The faceless man could merely be someone who doesn't stand out in a croud, who doesn't attract attention to himself. Although I think it would be cool to have a character WITHOUT a face, I'm not sure this is so. I think it's a metaphor. He may have never been found because at the end of the war, he might have decided to just blend into the crowd and live. ....Maybe.....
