In Response To: Re: Random Watcher Speculation (Thoth)

: I thought the Watcher was supposed to be some warped and
: ancient god of fertility or births because his
: "title" or whatever it was, is similiar to
: that of some book were a god of fertility is twisted
: with evil somehow. (I don't know the whole facts, its
: around this site somewhere) His name was Mad Goat of
: the Black Fey or somethin.
: Anyways, it seemed pretty solid and accepted that this is
: what The Watcher is. Perhaps his name as the God was
: Bahl'al (did I spell it right?) and that since a god
: is supposed to be "all seeing and all
: knowing" he gained the name The Watcher. This
: means that The Watcher is more than likely an Ancient
: Evil even though at one time he may have been good.
: On another note, I think that Bonesplitter and The
: Voiceless one are the two F. Lords never seen.

I wrote the analysis you're thinking of. :-)

Yeah, the Watcher's called the Mad Goat of the Fens. This recalls Lovecraft's fertility deity Shub-Niggurath, who's also known as the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young. My thinking was that because the Watcher likes to use undead so much, and was the first known sorcerer to fight with mostly-undead armies, and apparently created Thrall (who are called his "children"), he became known as (or considered himself to be) a sort of fertility god or all-father for the undead.

This is NOT to say he actually is a god, though. I just think Bungie looked at what the Watcher's role in Myth history as been and decided to throw in that title as homage to Lovecraft. As far as we know, he's just an old, evil sorcerer.

To recap on the names and missing lords thing: There were 3 names we didn't positively identify with any Lord from the pregame info: Bonesplitter, the Voiceless One and the Faceless Man. Prior to GURPS, some of us (I did, at least) identified Shiver with Bonesplitter, and the Voiceless One and Faceless Man with the two missing Lords.

Then GURPS came along. It mentioned a new Lord (the Lurker) identified the Voiceless One as a Lord named Ravanna, and mentioned nothing about Bonesplitter or the Faceless Man. It also mentioned the significance of the Deceiver's calling Shiver "Ravanna" and suggested that possibly Shiver and Ravanna were identical and there was one other Lord.

To my knowledge, the currently-favored view on the Asylum is that Shiver and Ravanna are indeed the same person, and the leftover Fallen Lord is the Faceless Man (I guess because that sounds more appropriate than "Bonesplitter" for someone we never got to see.) My personal and fanatically defended belief is that Ravanna is *not* Shiver but was impersonating her during Myth 2, and that neither Bonesplitter nor the Faceless Man have any relevance in the final version of the game. But if you ask anyone else here about my theory, they'll readily tell you that it's crazy talk. :-)
