Well, Connacht--the previous good personality of Balor himself--killed the last Leveller, Moagim Reborn. Prior to that, Moagim was killed by a consortium of Light forces, probably including whatever Light champion was around at that time.
Basically, the great Light champion of each age--Tireces, Connacht, Alric--is more or less on the same power level as the Leveller. They may be somewhat less powerful, in which case they lose and a Dark Age occurs, or they may be somewhat more powerful, in which case they win and a Light Age occurs.
This era was *supposed* to be a Dark Age & Alric was supposed to lose, which is why Balor was so much more powerful than he was.
