Could have wandered in from off the map. The Knot was very near a mesh edge. Game-engine-wise they were always there, just not active, and they were spontaneously activated when all your units got far enough away. So they didn't really come from anywhere, in game-fact. But story-fact and game-fact differ; the game uses tricks that present obvious holes in story-reality, like being able to walk off the mesh in places. So they could have come through the Knot, or they could have walked in from the edge of the mesh. Since the Knot didn't activate (you can watch it while you walk away; no activation particle effect; and you can see particle effects that are beyond your viewing distance), I'm inclined to say they walked in from elsewhere.
