Actually, we pretty much know they weren't actually banished. Connacht found their shrines already deserted; he didn't have to send them anywhere.

But who says they didn't *want* to go into the Tain? They built it; it housed the gateway to their patron spider-gods; they outfitted it with handy-dandy gates and lightning towers to keep away any of its more annoying inhabitants. Nice place to take a vacation of a few years or decades or centuries until they went...wherever they went.
