: One other thing- is possession of one Knot necessary to
: transport creatures to its opposite end? Homecoming
: speaks of "in a few moments Rabican himself is
: going to send a few of us through a World Knot to
: Covenant, to bring back the Codex", but when the
: Deciever tries to attack you in the rear, and at
: Rhi'Anon, there is no suggestion of an entry Knot. My
: guess has been that a mage of the required power can
: transport creatures a relatively short distance to a
: world knot the symbol of which the user can picture in
: his mind, but even a non-wizard entering a knot can
: use it to travel a relatively short distance, as long
: as one of them has a firm idea of where they're going,
: and can picture it in their minds. If the mental
: picture is flawed, limbo! If my theory is less crazy
: than it sounds, then a mage of the required ablitily
: standing on or near a World Knot would be able to
: transport creatures through it to its other,
: extraplanar, end, if that was what he had in mind. A
: "relatively short distance" might be about
: 10,000 miles, ie. realtively short compared to
: interplanar travel.
It seems to me that you can either push or pull people through Knots. Rabican pushed people through the Knot to Covenant; Alric pulled people through to Rhi'anon. The one thing that bothers me is how it seems ANYONE can go through Knots, with or without mages to power them. Beyond the Cloudspine, The Great Library, missions like that; people just walk into the Knot and vanish.
One thing that occurres to me is that it seems every Knot we know of we have only seen go one place. The Cloudspine Knot only goes to Madrigal. The Covenant Knot only goes to Madrigal. So I would think that maybe Knots are permanant links between two and only two places - except that Madrigal seems to be part of a three-way link. Maybe Madrigal has two Knots?
The other thing that bothers me about all of this is the Rhi'anon Knot. Alric pulled people through to it - but from where? Can powerfull archmages use Knots to pull people from non-Knot locations? But it seems Alric can teleport people without even using Knots - see Out Of The Barrier and The Last Battle. So why even bother with Knots?
One possible explanation could be that an archmage like Alric doesn't need the intact machinery of a Knot to transport people, he just needs proximity to the Knot-nexus-place. Perhaps there was once a Knot on that hill in the Barrier, which he used to teleport everyone. But then, what about The Last Battle? He could have been close enough to the Rhi'anon Knot to use it maybe - but then why the "come closer, quickly!" in the Barrier?
Curiouser and curiouser...
