In Response To: Re: Myth's Gods (Thoth)

: So Wyrd is kind of like God, or Allah, or Budha, etc. and
: is a monotheism religion, where Nyx is just the Trow's
: monotheism religion and whatever that Bre'Unor god is
: then that is their monotheism religion, right? In
: other words this isn't really a polytheism religion we
: see in the Myth world. Everyone has their own god that
: they worship, but they seem to include only one god.
: This would support the Cathedral in Covenant and since
: the word cathedral has come to mean basically house
: for God and since in Catholicism there is one god, it
: is indeed safe to say that the Cath Bruig believed
: only in Wyrd right? Or else Bungie shouldn't have
: called it a cathedral because it would have been a
: temple devoted to that one god. This is all assuming
: that cathedral means the same thing in Myth as it does
: Here.

I think cathedral is just being used to mean "Big Pretty Church Thing." :-) It's been used that way in other Bungie games; the meaning is fairly loose. Even if it *was* supposed to be linked to Catholicism, there'd be no reason to believe that the link was monotheism, as opposed to (say) belief in an afterlife, or a doctrine of redemption, or ritual consumption of the god's flesh.

One TFL conversation has a peasant saying "We're going to the shrine to pray for help," and a Zerk replying, "You waste your time. The gods aren't listening." This implies that Northmen, at least, are polytheistic. And GURPS confirms that polytheism is the norm in Myth. Different gods are *primary* in different places, but almost everyone recognizes more than one. Think of Hinduism--different sects spend most of their time on Brahma or Vishnu or Shiva, but most of them believe in all 3 (plus something like 3 million lesser gods.)

Incidentally, Covenant's in the Province, so its churches don't directly indicate the religious beliefs of the Cath Bruig. They're probably similar, though; Bruig are known to invoke Wyrd.

: In case anyone doesn't know: Monotheism= belief in one
: god
: Polytheism= belief in more than one god
: Full definition of Cathedral= principal church of a
: diocese.
: Diocese= kind of like the territory of a bishop.

Again, I think this is taking terms a bit too literally. :-) Even outside of Bungie, "cathedral's" often used in contexts other than modern Catholicism.
