Yeah, sounds reasonable, you've convinced me. The Journal Writer is almost certainly not a Fir'Bolg (we don't even know if they have a written language. They might use pictograms for all we know. Unless GURPS says something about this).
What I find especially interesting, though, is that the Journal is written in Bruig. Do they speak Bruig as a first language in the West? It would be pretty strange for anyone to write their personal journal in a foreign language (and even if it was intended to be published after the war, there are so few people left alive in Cath Bruig that this would be a pretty poor commercial venture). And yet practically the only survivors of the Cath Bruig empire are Heron Guards, but the Journal Writer says that he's been fighting the Dark for seventeen years. A Journeyman would have been taking part in the war for fifty years at least.
