I think the bottom line is that the narrator is NOT on the battlefield since the units aren't consistent. If there was a warrior on every level (except for the 5 champions levels) then it would be safe to assume he is one of those units. Consider this though: I havn't read every word for word, but what if the writer wasn't a warrior at all? What if hes a story teller, a bard. He follows the Legion and almost pretends that he is real big. This would mean that he falls back whenever there is danger and acts mostly as that annoying reporter that no one cares about. Perhaps he is really good at hiding and so isn't noticed by the dark. So imagine he sits in the Legion's camps and listens to what everyone is saying and writes this stuff down. Whenever the troops move he moves with em. This would kind of explain the rather rude remark that the soldier said to him in forest heart when he said "Soulblighter is here. Put that in your journal" that doesn't sound like something that would be said to a mid to low ranking officer, itd be more like "Sir, Soulblighter is here" or something. Maybe at the end when he burries his journal he was simply trying to make it dramatic and left when he felt danger was near and brought the book with him, kept it untill he either died or sold it (perhaps to Baron Kildear) If this character of mine is true then I doubt he'd really bury his "master piece." This all sounds like the work of a bard or a good story teller (and it is a good story) so I wonder if its just a guy thats a bit of a coward who pretends to be "just another one of the grunts." Just an idea to think about.
