: they do as a last resort.
Actually, I s00k - I just enjoy good films and find myself a decent judge of them. (I also happen to have made up the rules, and started the first and longest-lasting Myth solo film site). Asmo and his ilk are the real Mythmasters, I'm just their keeper :-)
As for what to do, the strategy is to make sure all the Mahir are dead, get Alric all healed up, and shoot a fire arrow or two at Soulblighter. He'll come to fight Alric, and the two should go at it for a while until Soulblighter's glaive breaks and he flees up into Tharsis.
The thing is, and I don't know why, but sometimes Alric goes stupid. I've seen him in the middle of a bunch of Myrkridia in such a situation where he could just take one or two swings and toast them all, but he just sits there all dummy-like. It's not flinching from being hit - Alric doesn't flinch - but it looks like it, and is just as deadly. He does it sometimes facing Soulblighter too.
My best guess is that it has something to do with his experiance; that it overflows when it goes to high, and somehow makes him act NEGATIVELY experianced. That is, he attacks slower than his normal stats indicate. But I have only the slightest knowledge of the inner workings of the Myth engine, so I can't really vouch for the accuracy of this theory.
