: artifacts suggest a long time too.
The hiding artifacts came later, actually, during the Light-ruled Wolf Age. But yeah, all the Levellers/Fallen Lords powerful and willing enough to destroy the world get killed before they can accomplish it. GURPS suggests that there may sometimes be Levellers who are more interested in conquest and making humanity miserable for long periods of time--and Balor may be one such, although the narrator quite naturally assumes that his motives are total destruction--and these guys might live longer.
