In the only documented Dark Age, the Wind Age, the Myrkridia were unable to topple the walled cities, but ravaged everything outside them for the duration of the Era. If Balor had won, though, it seems more likely that ragtag groups hiding in the forests and such would have had the best chance of survival. Perhaps this relates to the order/chaos balance; the greatest centers of order survive in a chaotic dark age, and the most chaotic and scattered groups survive in an orderly dark age.
