I don't know if you've ever heard of a game called Magic: The Gathering, but this sound quite a bit like the Brothers' War storyline. The Brothers are both powerful sorcers and artificers and make all sorts of walking and flying machines. Essentially the gather up all their forces and mages and soldiers ship out to this island Argoth and end up duking it out. And, what they end up doing is devasting not only nations but an entire continent. When Urza relizes that his brother Mishra isn't his brother any more but a thinking automaton (like The Voiceless One and Robocan in your idea) he fires off a powerful artifact and unleashes an explosion that ushers in an ice age. Sorta like you proposed Tain/Great Deviod event.
