: Not necessarily... ki'Angsi was only one of the champions
: in the _war_, more on this later...
: Also, as far as I know the Ermine was never actually
: invaded by the dark. So thier race wasn't as
: threatened as the humans were. They joined with the
: legion to safeguard that.
I'm sure they were well aware that any force capable of destroying the Cath Bruig and defeating a Province-Dwarf alliance would have very little trouble overrunning the Ermine.
Also, the bre'Unor are genuinely Dark, not just independently operating bastards. Within the Ermine, they would *be* the primary fighting force of the Dark, conducting much more well-organized and unrelenting attacks than they do normally. Surely it was imperative to the fir'Bolg that the Leveller be stopped, if only so the bre'Unor would subside.
: Name one :)
Dan mentioned one--I'll mention musical instruments. Violin in particular.
: While it is true that the fir'Bolg can't shoot as well in
: a forest, perhaps that's what their skills are
: tailored for. Maybe they are better at short range,
: surprise, shooting out of the trees.
It's possible...but, as we see in-game, they're not. :-)
: Untrue in the extreme. The best and the brightest of any
: given craft usually take to teaching when the get too
: old to go to battle. Also remember that even though
: the fir'Bolg came and helped the humans, I doubt that
: that was all of thier population. Remember that
: they've got malignant, evil, and hostile force right
: in thier front yard. I imagine that the _true_ masters
: stayed at home to defend the women, children and
: towns, while those of lesser skill went out to fight
: with the legion.
a) The champions take to teaching *when they're too old to fight*. Therefore, the ex-champion teachers wouldn't be very useful as backup for the Legion in Myth 2.
b) Ex-champions may become teachers, but they're usually not *the best* teachers. Teaching any discipline, physical or mental, requires a different set of skills from excelling at that discipline. I'm sure you've recognized this in your own teachers by now. :-) So the most capable masters at the war colleges probably wouldn't be the best at archery.
c) If these masters stayed at home during TFL, they'd almost certainly stay at home if the fir'Bolg came out against Soulblighter. So their existence wouldn't be a factor in whether or not the Light needs the fir'Bolg.
: To the war effort abroad? perhaps not. To the home front
: (where they probably were) Definately. Remember also
: that when Bungie saw how much the fir'Bolg missed in
: TFL, they decided to cut that shorter and make them
: more accurate, giving them a chance. Perhaps it's not
: a question of skill, but of gameplay :)
Yes, but even aspects of Myth influenced by gameplay must be considered within the storyline. After all, it's because of gameplay that there's a powerful, evil force that almost destroys the Mythworld but is ultimately defeated. Myth exists because of gameplay. :-)
Regardless, I must give up my belief that human archers match fir'Bolg archers, because GURPS says they don't. My original argument stands, however: the fir'Bolg that we actually see in-game--in other words, the ones that get sent out to help the Light--are less effective archers than the humans. Therefore, there's much less need for them in Soulblighter, when there's thousands of human archers already available. Even if there were hundreds of Ascended Masters with insane archery skills inside the Ermine, there wouldn't be any more reason for the fir'Bolg to send them out than there was in TFL, and there wouldn't be any more reason for Alric to beg for their help. Hence, no fir'Bolg in Myth2
