In Response To: Re: Fir'Bolg and Others (SiliconDream =PN=)

: We saw what fir'Bolg can do when the situation is
: desperate and the survival of their entire race is at
: stake. And they *still* weren't any better than Myth
: 2's human archers. Sure, they had their champions like
: ki'Angsi, but Oderic's every bit as good. Better,
: since he has fire arrows.

Not necessarily... ki'Angsi was only one of the champions in the _war_, more on this later...

Also, as far as I know the Ermine was never actually invaded by the dark. So thier race wasn't as threatened as the humans were. They joined with the legion to safeguard that.

: This shouldn't really be surprising. Plenty of cultures
: have adopted foreign arts and technologies and become
: better at using them than their original creators.

Name one :)

: Sure, the fir'Bolg start using the bow from an earlier
: age--but on the other hand, as previously discussed in
: the Asylum, you can't really develop your archery
: skills to the max in a forest, where visibility and
: arrows' range are so drastically restricted. Human
: archers have much better opportunities to practice.
: Also, since there are a lot more humans period, there
: are naturally going to be a lot more humans who are
: naturally talented archers.

While it is true that the fir'Bolg can't shoot as well in a forest, perhaps that's what their skills are tailored for. Maybe they are better at short range, surprise, shooting out of the trees.

: I doubt the fir'Bolg masters are actually *better*
: archers than the champions we've seen in-game--the
: best practitioners of an art are rarely its best
: teachers

Untrue in the extreme. The best and the brightest of any given craft usually take to teaching when the get too old to go to battle. Also remember that even though the fir'Bolg came and helped the humans, I doubt that that was all of thier population. Remember that they've got malignant, evil, and hostile force right in thier front yard. I imagine that the _true_ masters stayed at home to defend the women, children and towns, while those of lesser skill went out to fight with the legion.

: --but even if they are, they wouldn't be
: numerous enough to make a significant contribution to
: the war effort, no matter how vast their individual
: abilities. We didn't hear anything about them helping
: the war in TFL, after all.

To the war effort abroad? perhaps not. To the home front (where they probably were) Definately. Remember also that when Bungie saw how much the fir'Bolg missed in TFL, they decided to cut that shorter and make them more accurate, giving them a chance. Perhaps it's not a question of skill, but of gameplay :)
