Maybe the Skrael could have some interesting powers...like the ability to raise the dead? So they raised Alric to once again ascend the throne of the empire, but he dominated them. Some special skrael sorcerers would be interesting, for example if your warriors were slaughtered in the water, a legion of thrall would be created by the sorcerers (since they can't leave the water anyways). Forest giants would be great to have again too, on whichever side.
Maybe Alric leading the warriors of the water against those of the land? Forest giants being with Alric after fighting with the trow again?
Even though the Skrael really aren't evil...they could be just misunderstood, like those poor mauls who i'm sure you all blew to smitherines, even though they are nice little piggies...
