This incorrect. The TFL manual refers to Shades as the reanimated corpses of long-dead sorcerors. I'm guessing that since they retain their memories and skills, attempts to convert good sorcerors won't work, and there may be a way to convert the freshly killed if you kill them in some ritualistic fashion.
