I think it's *based* on the look of a really really angry baboon or similar monkey. When they get pissed and pull their upper lip back, the expanse of gum that's revealed is truly terrifying. But yeah, I don't think Ghols have that upper lip at all. Maybe it's some kind of ritualized disfigurement every young Ghol goes through...
