: as mellee units, and as such, they suck. Shades on the
: other hand have both free will (though they can be
: bound), a mind, and memories of thier past lives.

Perhaps the process is similar, but because of the shade's previous magical association, he retains things like his memory and will. I could go and look in GURPS, but I'm tired. So there.
