But aren't we surmising that from unused sound tags? Not
exactly conclusive evidence that Mazzarin wasn't supposed
to be there.
Someone from Bungie _decided_ not to use the "where did
he go?" tag, and they also _decided_ to type in "Mazzarin"
for the second shade's name. Can we decide the story
is different from the game because we think Bungie didn't
intend to produce what they did?
So, unless there's something else, like a statement from
Bungie saying that they made a mistake & it should've been
the same shade, then I'd prefer to believe what the game
says - the 1st shade is teleported out, and his buddy
Mazzarin teleports in.
Flavour text implies the Watcher defeated Mazzarin, and
its not clear whether shadification is a voluntary or a
forced procedure, or both. Hence it is not illogical that
a defeated Mazzarin becomes a shade under the control of the
Watcher.
Perhaps when the Watcher died, Mazz was freed from being a
shade somehow, and hence rumours of his continued
existence. Even if you kill him in the level, you could
be killing just a teleported image, which could explain
his lack of energon cubes.
