In Response To: Deciever (Nick O'Keefe (aka Plague Bearer))

: Hey, why not bring up an age old debate again. Because
: I'm still wondering.

: Was the Deceiver meant to die at the end of
: "Shiver"? It seems so much like it was a
: bug, when you watch it in the game.

Don't think it was a bug. As Ares says, they refer to it in the scripting. And it's not the sort of thing you'd miss in beta-testing. :-)

Doesn't really solve the question of whether he's dead or alive, though, since it's possible that he was either resurrected after death or that his death was an illusion or the destruction of a double. Whether or not you believe any of these depends on how significant you think it is that no one ever refers to Myrdred's death either in the games or in GURPS, and that GURPS always speaks of the big D in the present tense (whereas it speaks of other definitely-dead folks only in the past).

My personal belief is that he used a remote-controlled double or illusion to face Shiver so as to minimize the danger to himself, and that he revealed the deception immediately thereafter (which is why no one in the Light seems to have ever really thought that he was dead.) Yeah, it's kind of a cop-out soap-opera theory--"That wasn't me, it was my identical twin!"--and it's nowhere near provable, but at least it also explains the inconsistencies in where the Deceiver was toward the end of the Great War.

But pick your own theory and no one will complain.

: And another thing too, I am still unsatisfied as to why
: he 'converted' to the light.

He was never really dedicated to the Dark, it seems; he just likes to be on the winning side. And the other Fallen Lords disliked him so much that, without Balor there to keep the peace, he probably couldn't have rejoined their cause even if he'd wanted to.

GURPS also suggests that perhaps he was a spy for the Light all along. And I think that maybe his allegiance is to civilization and he just thought Balor would produce a more stable society. And every other Asylum Inmate has their own personal crackpot theory on this score. :-)
