In Response To: Iron and the Younger Races (Discordia)

: Trow discovered iron. Trow treated iron. Trow made iron
: into big damn swords, pikes, and helmets. Trow threw
: iron away.

Hmm. The Forest Giants knew about iron, and revered it,
before the Trow "corrupted its soul". Pedantic, I know.

I always thought a typical Trow weapon would be a gigantic
hammer or mace. Nothing subtle like a sword or spear.

And what would they need armor for?

: At what point did humanity (and dwarvenkind for that
: matter, battleaxes and all) get ahold of ironworking?

Have we any evidence that Myth dwarves used battleaxes?
Actually, the TFL logo was a pair of these things, but
I don't recall a single battleaxe used by a TFL unit.
Thrall don't count, as theirs was a single blade, not a
true double-bladed battleaxe.

: I truly doubt that the trow would have taught it to
: the younger races, but you see it used to make swords
: and armor (both sophisticated works) by the time of
: the Oghre rebellion (1435 AE). Any who dispute this
: fact should read GURPS. According to it, Connacht
: arose in 1431 AE and destroyed (entombed actually) the
: Trow in between 1439 AE (the end of the Oghre wars and
: when the Trow cast down thier iron tools) and 1462 AE
: (when he left in self-imposed exile). Now we all know
: that Connacht at least wore plate mail from the
: "Tales from Myth TFL (note to Forrest: it ain't
: the same he wore as Leveller, look at it closely, it
: has a different helmet, a cape and a dragon thingmy
: emblazoned on its chest).

I reckon they discovered iron-working independantly.
Perhaps they were inspired by seeing how the Trow had used
iron, and worked out how it was done for themselves. Maybe
they spied on the Trow to find out the secret, but then
again its not one of the hardest things to discover.

: So the question is when did humans learn the secrets of
: ironworking and why did the Trow say that they left
: iron to the younger races when the younger races
: already _had_ it.

The Trow retired from iron-working, and seeing that the
youngsters were already going at it, they said "we'll leave
it to them". Sort of like Jack Nicklaus leaving golf to
Tiger Woods.

As to when humans started iron-working, from my scant
knowledge it seems that humans have always had it as far
as recorded Myth history goes. And when did humans arise?
Thats another question.

Here's one: If the Forest Giants hated the Trow because
they corrupted iron, how could they stand even a temporary
alliance with iron-working (and iron-wielding) humans?
