If you look at the background in the comic, there isn't any "background" life around when the Trow and the other elder races are being created; no plants or insects or anything like that. This may support the sterility of all the ancient creatures; since the gods had to make each one "by hand" instead of trusting to reproduction, they had to be big and impressive and practically invincible. Once some clever god invented reproduction, all the more fragile and short-lived younger races could be created, whose high death rates would be balanced by their birth rates, as well as the humbler forms of life (grass, mice, etc.) that could now get by on their own without divine intervention.
